Why is my boiler not working correctly?
We understand that when something goes wrong with your boiler it can be stressful and inconvenient — you rely on your boiler to keep your home warm and your water hot, but don’t worry, we’re here to help!
Our friendly team have put together a list of the most common questions we get asked and our expert engineers have shared their knowledge to get you back up and running.
As always, if you need any further help, just give us a call — and we will be there to solve the problem!
Nigel says: Check your thermostat is set correctly, see if the boiler pressure is at the right level between 1-2 bar and look into whether the pilot light is on. If you’re still unsure of these, reset your boiler, and see if the problem persists - if so, call us.
Steve says: If your boiler pressure is low, usually below 1 bar, it needs to be re-pressurised. This can usually be done by opening the filling loop (the silver or blue hose under the boiler, however, some have a key or turning dial) until the pressure gauge reaches 1.5 bar. If the boiler pressure continues to drop, you need an engineer.
Keith says: Noises from your boiler or pipes like banging, whistling, bubbling and hissing could be caused by trapped air, low water pressure or a buildup of limescale (sludge). My advice would be to bleed your radiators first, but for a full and proper job, we can power flush the whole system for you and get it right back to where it should be.
Kieran says: Radiators with cold patches, especially at the top, mean there’s trapped airing there. Bleeding your radiators should fix the problem once the air is released and that space is filled with hot water. If the bottom of your radiator is cold, it could be a build up of sludge or dirt in the pipes - so your best bet would be to get us round for a power flush.
Ben says: This is a tricky one. It could be that you’ve got low water pressure or thermostat issues. It might even be a blocked condensate pipe which is common in winter and colder months. Check the pressure and reset the boiler but your best bet would be to get one of our experts to diagnose the problem properly.
Ste says: I’d always recommend to have a yearly boiler service to maintain efficiency, and catch any small issues early before they turn into bigger problems. You’ll also stay compliant with product warranties and home insurance. I’d suggest you get your boiler serviced in the summer months to be fully prepared for the winter ahead.
Ollie says: There are three main types:
Combi Boiler – Heats your water on demand so there’s no need for a separate tank.
System Boiler – This uses a hot water cylinder but no cold tank.
Conventional Boiler – This requires both hot and cold water tanks and can be called 'gravity systems".
Greg says: The cost of energy continues to rise, so it’s important to create efficient habits to get the most out of your heating. Set your thermostat to between 18-21°C for living areas depending on your comfort levels and schedule heating times for the coldest times of the day or when you’re in your home. Of course you should regularly bleed radiators but it’s worth considering upgrading to a new A-rated boiler if yours is over 10 years old. This would save you money in the long run.
Nigel says: Seeing a boiler fault code or error code can cause a bit of a panic, but don’t worry, that just means we’re one stop closer to figuring out the problem. You can find a full list of fault codes directly from your boiler manufacturer’s website but if in doubt, call us.
